The Red Crystal Shrimp is a stunning freshwater invertebrate prized for its bold red and white banding and elegant appearance. Selectively bred from wild Caridina cantonensis, these shrimp are a staple of the aquascaping and shrimp-keeping hobby. Their refined beauty and active behaviour make them a captivating addition to any planted aquarium.

Behaviour & Compatibility:

Red Crystal Shrimp are peaceful and thrive in calm, well-established aquariums. Best kept in colonies of 10 or more, they display fascinating social interactions and are excellent algae grazers. They can only be housed with other non-aggressive tank mates such as small tetras, rasboras, snails, or other dwarf shrimp species. Avoid keeping them with large or predatory fish.

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature: 20–25Β°C

  • pH: 5.5–6.8

  • GH: 4–6

  • KH: 0–2

  • TDS: 100–180 ppm

  • Diet: Omnivorous – feed a balanced mix of specialised shrimp foods, blanched vegetables, and biofilm.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20L (for a small colony)

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social

Breeding:
Given stable, soft, slightly acidic water, Red Crystal Shrimp breed readily. Females carry eggs under their abdomen for about 30 days before releasing fully formed miniature shrimp. Ensuring consistent water parameters and a mature tank environment will help maximise survival rates.

Why We Love Them:
These shrimp are living jewels β€” graceful, delicate, and endlessly fascinating to watch. Their vivid contrast of red and white adds a touch of refinement to any aquascape, and their gentle grazing keeps plants and surfaces beautifully clean.
