Key Benefits:

  • Peaceful and ideal for community tanks

  • Active, curious behavior adds life to the substrate

  • Hardy and easy to care for

  • Compatible with shrimp, small fish, and snails

Care Notes:
Provide a soft, sandy substrate to protect their delicate barbels and plenty of hiding spots with plants, driftwood, or rocks. Feed sinking foods such as wafers, pellets, or blanched vegetables.

Water Parameters:
πŸ’§ Temperature: 22–28Β°C (72–82Β°F)
πŸ’§ pH: 6.0–7.5
πŸ’§ GH/KH: Soft to moderately hard water

Breeding Tips:
Aspidoras breed naturally in groups of 6 or more. Encourage spawning with slightly cooler water changes and a high-protein diet of live or frozen foods (blackworms, grindal worms, or cyclops). Spawning varies by species:

  • Aspidoras pauciradiatus: Prefers well-oxygenated water; males fertilize eggs held by females in the pelvic fins.

  • Aspidoras rochai: Spawns among dense vegetation; adults do not guard eggs.

  • Aspidoras spilotus: Favours gentle current and well-oxygenated water; often spawns at night.
