🐠 Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi)

A true jewel of the freshwater world, the Cardinal Tetra is famous for its striking neon blue stripe and deep crimson body. Native to the slow-moving blackwater tributaries of the Amazon Basin, these peaceful schooling fish bring incredible colour and energy to any community aquarium. Their calm nature and vibrant hues make them a perfect choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Behaviour & Compatibility:
Cardinal Tetras are shoaling fish that thrive in groups of at least 10 or more. When kept in numbers, they display their best colours and natural schooling behaviour. They’re peaceful and compatible with most community fish — ideal tank mates include rasboras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras catfish, and small shrimp.

Care Requirements:

• Temperature: 24–28°C

• pH: 5.0–7.0

• GH: Soft to moderately hard (1–8 dGH)

• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.

• Tank Size: Minimum 60L (for a small school)

• Temperament: Peaceful and social

Breeding:
Cardinal Tetras can be challenging to breed in captivity, requiring very soft, acidic water and subdued lighting. Conditioning adults with live foods can help stimulate spawning behaviour.
