The Black Medaka Ricefish is a selectively bred variant of the classic Japanese Medaka, admired for its striking dark body colour that adds elegance and contrast to any freshwater setup. Hardy, active, and peaceful, these fish are an excellent choice for both aquariums and outdoor tubs or ponds, where their subtle yet beautiful presence shines.

Care & Behaviour
Black Medaka are highly adaptable and easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced fishkeepers. They are best kept in groups of six or more, where their shoaling behaviour becomes more noticeable. Peaceful by nature, they mix well with other small, non-aggressive fish.

Parameters

  • Temperature: 18–26°C (can tolerate mild seasonal fluctuations, making them excellent for unheated aquaria or outdoor tubs)

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • GH: 5–15 dGH

  • Tank size: 20L minimum, larger preferred for stable conditions

Diet
Omnivorous and unfussy, Black Medaka thrive on a mix of quality flake, micro-pellets, live foods, and frozen foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Their willingness to accept a wide variety of foods makes them both hardy and rewarding.

Breeding
Breeding Black Medaka is straightforward. Females carry eggs attached beneath their belly before depositing them on fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. With the right setup, fry can be collected and raised separately to increase survival rates. Outdoors, they often reproduce naturally in ponds or tubs during warmer months.

Note
Due to their resilience, adaptability, and peaceful nature, Black Medaka Ricefish are one of the most versatile and rewarding small fish to keep, whether indoors or outdoors.
