The Orange Lionhead Goldfish is a charming and distinctive variety of fancy goldfish, instantly recognisable by its rounded body, absence of a dorsal fin, and its characteristic “hood” growth on the head. With their striking bright orange coloration and unique appearance, Lionheads make excellent centrepiece fish for goldfish enthusiasts.

Care & Behaviour
Lionheads are peaceful, slow-moving fish that thrive in species-only goldfish tanks or with other similarly slow fancy varieties. Because of their body shape and lack of dorsal fin, they are less agile than common goldfish and should not be kept with faster or more competitive fish. Provide plenty of swimming space, smooth décor to avoid injury, and a well-filtered aquarium — these fish produce a high bioload.

Parameters

  • Temperature: 18–24°C

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • GH: 5–19 dGH

  • Tank size: Minimum 100L for a pair, with larger setups preferred

Diet
Lionhead Goldfish enjoy a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, gel foods, fresh vegetables (such as blanched spinach or peas), and occasional protein treats. Avoid excessive floating foods, as their body shape predisposes them to buoyancy issues.

Breeding
Breeding Lionheads is possible in well-conditioned pairs, though it can be challenging. Spawning typically occurs in cooler water changes during spring-like conditions, with eggs scattered and fertilised externally. Fry require careful raising on small live foods and powdered fry foods.

Livestock Disclaimer
Fish are sold unsexed and may vary slightly in size, shape, and colour from photos shown. Natural variation between individuals is normal. Please acclimate carefully; we cannot accept responsibility for losses caused by improper acclimation or unsuitable tank conditions.
