The Red Nose Barb is a beautiful and somewhat uncommon barb species, named for the distinctive reddish colouration around its snout and fins. Native to clear, fast-flowing streams and rivers in India, this active schooling fish adds both energy and uniqueness to a community aquarium. With their shimmering silver bodies and contrasting red accents, they make a striking display in larger planted tanks.

Care & Behaviour
Red Nose Barbs are peaceful but active swimmers that do best in groups of at least 6–8 individuals. They thrive in aquariums with good swimming space, moderate current, and shaded areas created by plants or driftwood. While generally peaceful, their activity can sometimes stress very timid fish, so they are best kept with other lively but non-aggressive species.

Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–26°C

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • GH: 5–15 dGH

  • Tank size: 150L minimum for a school

Diet
These barbs are omnivores and will accept a wide range of foods. A balanced diet of quality flakes or pellets should be supplemented with live and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, or brine shrimp to enhance their colour and condition.

Breeding
Breeding Red Nose Barbs in captivity is possible but considered challenging. They are egg scatterers that typically spawn in groups, releasing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. A separate breeding tank with slightly softer water and plenty of cover will improve success. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Livestock Disclaimer
Fish are sold unsexed and may vary slightly in size, shape, and colour from photos shown. Natural variation between individuals is normal. Please acclimate carefully; we cannot accept responsibility for losses caused by improper acclimation or unsuitable tank conditions.
